REB Rolls Out Updated Lower Primary Textbooks for the 2026/2027 Academic Year

REB officially released updated and revised Pupils’ Books and Teachers’ Guides for all primary levels, from Primary 1 through Primary 6, with the materials already available online and in use in classrooms. For lower primary (P1–P3) specifically, the revision responds to a practical classroom challenge. According to REB’s Deputy Director General, the original CBC was designed around a single-shift school day of eight periods, yet more than half of lower primary schools actually run on a double-shift system with only five periods a day a mismatch that left syllabi incomplete and contributed to poor learning outcomes and repetition. To close that gap, curriculum support materials textbooks, teacher guides, syllabi, and lesson distribution plans have all been revised to fit the time schools actually have.

What’s in the Updated Books

Each grade now comes with two companion resources: Pupils’ Books, containing reading passages, activities, and assessment tasks tied to competency-based objectives, and Teachers’ Guides, which walk educators through how to deliver each unit. REB has also published new primary textbooks alongside revised syllabi, content distribution plans, and schemes of work to support the rollout.

Built for the Real School Day

The update isn’t limited to books. A revised Primary timetable for lower primary now blends academic learning with reading support, remedial interventions, practical skills, physical education, and creativity, while carving out dedicated time for teachers’ professional development. Complementing this, REB’s 2026 Holiday Remedial Program targeted Primary 1 to Primary 5 learners who scored below 50% the previous year, focusing lower primary sessions on Kinyarwanda, Mathematics, and English to help close foundational gaps before the new year begins.

Free and Accessible Online

As with previous revisions, cost and access remain central to the rollout. REB’s e-Learning platform continues to offer free access to official textbooks and learning materials across all levels, including a dedicated Primary category covering every subject from P1 through P6.

For teachers, school leaders, and parents, the 2026/2027 lower primary textbook update signals more than a routine content refresh it reflects REB’s effort to make the curriculum match the reality of Rwanda’s classrooms, particularly in double-shift schools where instructional time is limited. As these materials reach schools nationwide, the focus now shifts to implementation: ensuring every P1–P3 classroom, whichever shift it runs on, has the right books in hand when the new academic year begins.
