As Rwanda gears up for the 2026/2027 academic year, the Rwanda Basic Education Board (REB) has released updated textbooks for upper primary learners, giving Primary 4 to Primary 6 classrooms fresh Pupils’ Books and Teachers’ Guides aligned with the Competence-Based Curriculum (CBC).
What’s Included at Each Grade
Primary 4 now has Pupils’ Books and Teachers’ Guides covering English, Kinyarwanda, French, Mathematics, Science and Elementary Technology (SET), Social and Religious Studies (SST), Creative Arts, and Physical Education and Sports (PES). Primary 5 comes with all eight subjects fully covered, including dedicated guides for teacher-led subjects like PES and SST. Primary 6, the final and most consequential year of primary school, has received particular attention: its materials directly support preparation for the national P6 examinations administered by NESA, with the Teachers’ Guides including specific guidance on exam-readiness activities.
Sharper Alignment with CBC
The revision is built around Rwanda’s Competency-Based Curriculum, which shifts learners away from memorizing facts toward applying knowledge, collaborating, and thinking critically. Two changes stand out in this cycle. Each unit now opens with a clear statement of what learners should be able to do by the end of the lesson, making progress easier to track for both teachers and pupils. The books also lean more heavily on locally relevant examples and scenarios that Rwandan children can relate to, particularly strengthening engagement in English and other core subjects.
Supported by Updated Syllabi and Schemes of Work
The textbook revision isn’t standalone it comes packaged with supporting curriculum documents. Alongside the new P4, P5, and P6 Pupils’ Books and Teachers’ Guides, REB has also released revised Upper Primary syllabi, content distribution plans, and dedicated schemes of work for upper primary subjects. Grounding this work, upper primary syllabi continue to apply an inquiry-based, constructivist approach to subjects like Science and Elementary Technology: rather than relying on teacher-led, direct instruction, learners are placed in the driver’s seat, constructing meaning and understanding through active engagement with scientific concepts.
As with earlier revisions, REB has prioritized free, wide access to the updated materials. Through its e-Learning platform, REB provides free access to official textbooks and learning materials, including a complete Primary category covering every subject from P1 through P6. For upper primary teachers and P6 candidates in particular, these updated textbooks arrive at a high-stakes moment: P6 remains the gateway year to secondary school through national exams. With clearer competency statements, more relatable content, and dedicated exam-preparation guidance built into the P6 Teachers’ Guides, the 2026/2027 rollout aims to give both teachers and learners a sharper, more locally grounded set of tools as the new academic year begins.
