Engineering Technician – Building Automated Systems Job Overview

The Engineering Technician will be responsible for operating and maintaining computer- and microprocessor-controlled systems across the U.S. Embassy compound. The position involves diagnosing technical problems, maintaining mechanical and electrical systems, and supporting building automation equipment.

The role requires strong knowledge of Building Automation Systems (BAS), control systems, sensors, actuators, and computerized building management systems.

U.S. Embassy Rwanda Job Requirements

Applicants should meet the following key requirements:

  • A four-year Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, general engineering, computerized systems, control systems, or sensor technology.
  • At least five years of relevant experience in operating and maintaining Building Automation Systems.
  • At least two years of direct BAS maintenance experience.
  • At least three years of experience working with large modern commercial or government buildings.
  • Experience with U.S. building, construction, trade, fire, and safety codes and standards.
  • Fluency in English and Kinyarwanda, including speaking, reading, and writing.
  • A valid driver’s license and clean driving record.

Key Skills and Knowledge

The ideal candidate should have strong technical knowledge of building automation systems and their components, including sensors and actuators. Candidates should also be able to interpret sensor readings and fault codes, diagnose system failures, adjust system settings, and support reliable building operations.

Knowledge of AutoCAD and strong computer skills, including Microsoft Office applications, are also required. Good communication, organization, interpersonal skills, and the ability to manage multiple tasks are important for the position.
