REB Announces English Proficiency Assessment for Head Teacher and Deputy Head Teacher Applicants

REB Announces English Proficiency Assessment for Head Teacher and Deputy Head Teacher Applicants and their sites.

The Rwanda Basic Education Board (REB) has announced the next stage of its recruitment process for school leadership positions, informing candidates who applied for Head Teacher and Deputy Head Teacher roles and successfully passed the written examination that they must now sit for an English Proficiency Assessment.

Purpose of the Assessment

The English Proficiency Assessment is designed to evaluate whether candidates possess the level of English communication skills required for effective school leadership. Performance on this assessment will directly determine which applicants advance to the interview stage of the selection process.

Assessment Dates

Candidates will sit for the test on an allocated date between 3rd and 6th September 2026. The specific assessment center, date, and time assigned to each candidate will be published on the official REB website, www.reb.gov.rw, starting 31st August 2026. Applicants are encouraged to check the website regularly for their designated details.

Guidelines for Candidates

REB has outlined the following requirements and rules for all candidates taking part in the assessment:

  1. Assigned Center Only — Candidates must sit for the test exclusively at the examination center to which they have been officially assigned.
  2. National ID Required — An original National ID must be presented before a candidate is admitted into the assessment room.
  3. Personal Headphones — Candidates are required to bring their own functional headphones for use during the online assessment.
  4. No Electronic Devices — Mobile phones and other unauthorized electronic devices are strictly prohibited inside both the assessment room and the waiting room.
  5. Single Test for Multiple Applications — Candidates who passed the written exam for more than one school leadership position will take the Online English Proficiency Test only once; the resulting score will apply to all positions they applied for.

What This Means for Applicants

This assessment marks a critical checkpoint in Rwanda’s ongoing efforts to strengthen school leadership by ensuring that Head Teachers and Deputy Head Teachers possess strong English communication competencies — an essential skill given the role English plays in Rwanda’s education system. Candidates are advised to prepare accordingly, confirm their assigned testing center once published, and arrive with all required documentation and equipment.
