Who Can Apply

The ASP is aimed at high-achieving African students who are serious about contributing to development in their home countries. To be considered, you must:

1. Hold citizenship of an African country.
2. Submit a complete master’s application to a WUR MSc programme before 1 December 2026.
3. Receive unconditional admission to that MSc programme.
4. Demonstrate academic excellence  specifically, a first-class honours degree with a GPA of 80% or higher at bachelor’s level.
5. Not already hold a master’s degree, as preference is given to students pursuing their first postgraduate qualification.

A word of caution: the December deadline is stricter than it might first appear. Your English language test results and your bachelor’s diploma must both be uploaded as part of a complete application before 1 December 2026  and English test results in particular can take several weeks to arrive. Applicants who wait until November to book their test often miss the window entirely, so it’s worth arranging this months in advance.

Only applicants who meet every one of these requirements will be considered for an invitation to the ASP selection procedure meeting the criteria makes you eligible for consideration, not automatically selected.

How the Selection Process Works

The WU Scholarship Selection Committee manages the entire process, and it unfolds in stages:

• Around March–April 2027, shortlisted applicants are notified by email that they’ve advanced to the final stage.
• The final stage includes a lottery among the shortlisted candidates to determine who actually receives the scholarship.
• On 7 April 2027, official scholarship offers go out to the selected students.
• Everyone else who made it to the final stage is placed on a waiting list, in case a spot opens up.

This lottery element is worth understanding clearly: strong academics get you into the pool of finalists, but the final award isn’t purely merit-ranked beyond that point  chance plays a role too.

• Start your English language test early. IELTS or TOEFL results can take weeks to process — don’t let this be the reason your application is incomplete.
• Secure your bachelor’s diploma well ahead of the deadline. If you’re graduating close to the cutoff, contact your university registrar early to understand processing times.
• Aim high academically. A GPA of 80%+ is a firm threshold, not a rough guideline.
• Apply to WUR directly first. The scholarship is only available to applicants pursuing one of WUR’s MSc programmes, and only for the September intake — WUR does not run scholarships for the February intake or for currently enrolled students.
• Treat this as a two-part process: getting unconditionally admitted to your MSc programme, and being selected for the scholarship, are separate hurdles both must be cleared.
